Law enforcement agencies will ramp up their traffic enforcement efforts later this month for “Operation Safe Driver Week”, which takes place from October 18th to the 24th.
The heightened enforcement operation is a joint effort between the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), targeting both commercial and non-commercial vehicles.
Last year more than 59,000 vehicles were stopped for unsafe driving practices.
The top five citations issued to drivers of commercial vehicles during the 2014 Safe Driver week were: 1) speeding, (2) failure to use a safety belt, (3) failure to obey traffic control devices, (4) improper lane change, and (5) following too closely.
The top five citations for passenger vehicles during the 2014 operation were: (1) speeding, (2) failure to use a safety belt, (3) failure to obey a traffic control device, (4) possession/use/under the influence of alcohol, and (5) improper lane change.
In addition to heightened enforcement, state agencies will also be holding various educational and safety awareness events.
