A multi-vehicle crash involving two semi trucks and four cars shut down parts of I-84 in Montgomery, New York, on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at around 12:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-84 between Exit 5A (Drury Lane/Route 54) and Route 208 (Exit 5) in Orange County.  Traffic was backed up to Route 17 (Exit 6).

Earlier in the week, the two-lane highway was limited to one lane while roadwork was underway. NYSDOT spokeswoman, Gina DiSarro commented that the NYSDOT was working on fixing bridge joints on the highway near the location of the crash.

Police say there is no indication that the roadwork led to the crash, but investigations are underway. Work on the bridge has ceased due to the crash.

Record Online reported that one witness, Tom Ruggiero, said he was right behind the accident when it happened. According to Ruggiero, a semi truck left black skid marks at least 20 feet long after its driver applied the brakes.

The witness noted that he saw 10 or 15 police cars and ambulances across the highway after the incident. Ruggiero told reporters that he saw some victims who appeared OK.

He said there was “a lot of twisted metal” at the crash site.

Police stated that one unidentified person died in the crash, and several others are being treated for injuries. Firefighters said that the crash left several trapped in their vehicles, including one infant. Four helicopters were called to the scene.

Tow trucks arrived to help removed damaged vehicles and to allow for a lane to be opened before rush hour. Traffic was detoured off Exit 5A, that leads to Route 747.

Troopers say the highway will be closed until further notice. Officials expect the roads to remain closed until at least 6 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
