The driver of a Ryder box truck hauling seafood was killed after crossing into oncoming traffic and crashing head-on into a semi truck on Monday.

The accident happened on Highway 290, east of FM 2104, between Giddings and Paige, Texas.

Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the crash occurred shortly after 5:15 a.m. According to the DPS, 42-year-old Pascual Rueda-Orozco was traveling westbound on 290 when he crossed into the eastbound lanes and struck a Peterbilt semi truck hauling lime.

Rueda-Orozco died at the scene. The 63-year-old Peterbilt driver, was airlifted to the hospital by STARFlight, KXAN reports.

“We had a Ryder truck that was going westbound and for some unknown reason, the driver of that truck went into the eastbound lane of traffic, striking a tanker head-on,” said Sgt. Robbie Barrera of the DPS Texas Highway Patrol.

The stretch of road was closed down for six hours as crews removed the truck debris from the site.

Back in March, TxDot announced that they plan to improve safety on Highway 290 by spending $2 million for increased lighting and road signs.

Police are still evaluating what caused the accident, however, DPS are warning other drivers to stay fresh and alert while driving to prevent similar accidents from happening in the future.

“When you’re driving out here, make sure you limit your distraction, especially early in the morning. I believe this crash happened at 5 a.m. It’s still a little dark outside,” said Sgt. Barrera. “Don’t be on your cell phone, make sure you’re paying attention to your driving, [and] don’t be eating or reaching for anything.”
