Turn signals are one of the oldest crash prevention devices in automobiles. It’s a device that hasn’t evolved since it was first implemented in 1940. Using a turn signal when making turns or switching lanes may seem like common sense at this point but it can be easily forgotten or neglected.
A recent test done by the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) to study the rate in which turn signals are used has returned with some disappointing results.
The test results showed that 48% of car drivers fail to use their turn signals, while either turning or switching lanes, after they recorded 12,000 vehicles. Studies have also found that drivers making improper turns only use their signals about 25% of the time. Nearly 2 million accidents occur a year as a result of the lack of signal use, twice the amount of accidents caused by distracted drivers.
As a means to remedy the the problem, researchers recommend using Smart Turn Signal technology, which will beep to remind drivers to use their turn signal, similar to a seat belt warning.
It’s a sad state when we have to develop technology to help us use technology. Unfortunately, It’s seems to be a necessity in the world we line in today.
