62-year-old truck driver Ronald Ruiz was murdered earlier this week when he was stabbed by his trainee and co-driver, 46-year-old Stanley Polk.
Polk was arrested later that evening when police found him near Interstate 35, about five miles from where the incident occurred.
His family recently spoke about the tragedy and said that Ruiz knew something was “off” about the man he was training. “He just said this trainee was different than the other trainees. I don’t know what he was all about but he really wanted him off the truck.” his daughter Shanna Griggs told reporters.
Griggs says that her father complained to his company, Werner Enterprises, about his co-driver’s refusal to cooperate and his reckless driving, but was told by the company to hang tight and and keep going. Ruiz followed his company’s orders up until his last moments, when he was ultimately killed by the man he was training.
According to KXXV.com, Polk would have been the last trainee of Ruiz’s career, as he had plans to give up training and instead drive as a team with his granddaughter, who just received her CDL, until his planned retirement in 2017.
