A large pileup involving at least 30 vehicles took place on southbound Interstate 5 near Bakersfield, California, on New Year’s Eve.

The California Highway Patrol reported that it started with a single crash that happened happened just before 9 a.m., involving two passenger vehicles. A tractor trailer then struck the two disabled vehicles, leading to a series of 12 other crashes. At least 30 vehicles were involved.

A 50-year-old man and 35-year-old woman who were involved in the initial crash were killed. Their names have not been released.

Officials say foggy conditions contributed to the crash. The LA Times reported that there was less than 500 feet visibility in the area.

The highway was closed for nearly 10 hours, until Saturday evening. It has since reopened.
