After an electrical fire destroyed a public rest stop building on Interstate 55 in Fruitland, Missouri, MoDOT officials determined that rebuilding the facility was too expensive and decided to convert the area into truck-only parking instead.
The newly rebuilt rest area, located on mile marker 108, will have restrooms and 12 truck-only parking spots, and is expected to be completed on September 22. The project cost MoDOT roughly $65,000.
MoDOT project manager DeAnna Rickabaugh said “We know what truckers face,” and said the agency is looking for ways to create more truck parking in the future, but is limited due to budget constraints.
