That nagging cliché question “What would you do” springs to mind when an ordinary civilian performs the extraordinary while driving his truck on a seemingly normal day.
Clinton Blackburn has seen a lot on the road but when he passed by a parked cruiser on the opposite side of the road, he spotted a juvenile prisoner choking his jailer.
Blackburn knew instinctively that he had to do something or a man’s life would be lost.
That something almost cost Blackburn’s life too.
Blackburn got out of his truck and broke the choke-hold, freeing the jailer. However, the prisoner was able to get a hold of the officer’s gun during the scuffle.
After unsuccessfully trying to fire the weapon, Blackburn and the Kentucky jailer were able to pin the prisoner down and contain him.
In that moment Blackburn says that he would have easily sacrificed his own life for the jailer, Darnell Herndon.
Don’t call him a hero though; Blackburn says that the real heroes are law enforcement officials like Herndon, who risk their lives everyday. Blackburn deflects any praise by saying “I did what I had to do”.
There is no doubt that our humble truck driver is a hero and deserves all the praise.
