A recent investigative report revealed that semi truck weigh stations in Kentucky are only open 29% of the time. The reason? A lack of enforcement personnel.

Officials say the lack of inspections have led to millions in missed revenue opportunities and allowed unsafe trucks to remain on the road.

The WKYT investigation highlighted the weigh station on southbound Interstate 75 in London, Kentucky. According to the report, officers at the weigh station were only able to inspect 250 out of 40,000 trucks in September.

“The number of commercial vehicle enforcement officers are at historically low levels,” said Transportation Cabinet Commissioner John-Mark Hack. “It’s something we are attacking head on,” he added.

The state has had difficulty in retaining enforcement officers because the pay-grade is too low, the report states. In order to remedy the issue, the state plans to hire 50 additional inspectors in the next 6 months.
