A multi-vehicle crash involving a semi truck, a police cruiser, and another vehicle, ended with a fatality on Tuesday morning.

It happened around 7 a.m., in front of a truck stop in Spearsville, Kansas.

24-year-old Trooper Dillon Keller was headed east on U.S. 50, responding to the scene of an accident. That’s when 71-year-old truck driver, Larry Weimer, driving a 1999 Freightliner, left the truck stop and drove into the eastbound lanes of U.S. 50.

According to The Hutchinson News, Weimer pulled in front of the police vehicle as he was leaving the truck stop.

Keller braked to avoid colliding with the semi, and ended up driving on the eastbound shoulder. He then veered back onto the eastbound lane, crossed over the center and collided with a 2007 Chrysler Sebring, driven by 59-year-old Lucinda Lampe of Offerle, who was yielding on the westbound shoulder.

The Sebring was forced backward by the impact, and it crashed into a 2004 Chevy HHR driven by 49-year-old Brian S. Herbert of Dodge City.

Lucinda Lampe was pronounced dead at the scene. Trooper Keller was taken to Western Plains Medical Center. Weimer and Herbert were not injured in the incident.

According to officials, all involved in the crash were properly restrained in seat-belts.

The accident closed U.S. 50 between Dodge City and Kinsley for nearly 11 hours. The highway was first closed at around 8 a.m. and was reopened by 6:45 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
