Sections of Johnston County, North Carolina, have been evacuated after a crash involving a semi truck ignited a massive fire on Interstate 95.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the incident happened on Wednesday around 1:45 p.m. near mile marker 95 when an RV ran into the back of a semi truck hauling a corrosive chemical.

Both of the vehicles caught fire upon impact.

Firefighters allowed the fire to burn itself out.

Authorities shut down northbound and southbound lanes of I-95 between mile markers 87 and 97 and evacuations were issued for those within a three-mile radius of the crash site.

Drivers in the area were forced to abandon their vehicles on the highway. Local schools and colleges were shut down as the fire burned directly behind Johnston Community college. A shelter was set up at the First Baptist Church of Smithfield.

Traffic has been detoured to avoid the area.

According to ABC 11, this crash was one of three crashes that occurred on the interstate on Wednesday.

The crash remains under investigation and no injuries have yet been reported.
