Interstate 710 South in Long Beach, California has reopened after a pileup involving multiple tractor trailers shut down the freeway for hours on Wednesday.
It happened shortly after 12:30 a.m. near the Willow Street exit. Investigators speculate that the collision was caused in part by excess speed.
Sgt. Chad New of the California Highway Patrol explained that traffic on the freeway had slowed for unknown reasons. As one truck was stopped in traffic, the two other were unable to slow down in time to avoid colliding with the first truck.
Traffic was delayed for a stretch of miles as crews cleared the scene and cleaned an oil spill.
According to ABC 7, all lanes near Willow Street and the 405 transition to the 710 South were shut down. They reopened by 7:30 a.m.
Two of the drivers who were trapped in their trucks were transported to a hospital.
One of the two injured drivers is in critical condition. The third driver was not reported to be injured. Their identities have not been released.
The incident remains under investigation.
