Two multi-vehicle pileups have shut down Interstate 49 in Texarkana, Arkansas, this morning.
The pileups occurred 9 miles south of Texarkana, around midnight, on both the north and southbound lanes.
According to police reports, the first crash occurred on the southbound lanes when a semi truck was struck from behind by a vehicle that failed to slow down. This caused a chain reaction, leading to a 10-car pileup.
Immediately after the first crash, three semi trucks were involved in an accident on the northbound lanes, directly across the median from the fist accident.
According to KATV.com, 3 people died and 7 were injured between both crashes. State troopers says dense fog may have been a contributing factor to the crashes.
Update: As of 7:45 a.m., both directions of I-49 are still closed. All traffic is being diverted to U.S. Highway 71.
