The Indiana Department of Transportation has spent $4.6 million to improve bridges along Interstate 65. The project will span from the north side of downtown Indianapolis from Senate Avenue to Alabama Street.
Proshot Concrete is undertaking the construction project, which consists of repairing the underneath of bridges, using preventative techniques to ensure safety, repainting steel, strengthening structures with reinforcement and fixing damaged concrete.
However, the ongoing project will impact traffic during overnight closures, specifically while construction crews work on the bridge decks above the interstate. During a maximum of 20 nights, the roads will be closed while crews prepare and repair the bridges.
The construction on the bridge decks will begin in late September, and specific dates and closures are to be announced.
Northbound I-65 closures include:
Weekdays between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., construction will cause the closure of all lanes of northbound I-65. During the interstate closure, the Exit 113 ramps to and from Pennsylvania and Meridian Streets will remain open. Large truck traffic will be directed via warning signs to take I-465 around Indianapolis.
The overnight construction will cause the northbound I-65 Exit 114 ramp to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street/West Street, as well as the Pine Street entrance ramp to northbound I-65 to temporarily close.
After this construction is finished, the northbound I-65 Exit 113 ramps to and from Meridian and Pennsylvania streets will be closed while night crews work on the ramps.
Southbound I-65 closures include:
During weekdays between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., construction will cause the closure of all but one lanes of southbound I-65. The southbound I-65 Exit 113 ramps to and from Meridian Street will also remain open during this time. Large truck traffic will be directed via warning signs to take I-465 around Indianapolis.
The overnight construction will cause the closure of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street/West Street entrance ramp to southbound I-65.
After this construction is finished, the southbound I-65 Exit 113 ramps to and from Meridian Street will be closed while night crews work on the ramps.
The construction project on I-65’s bridges in Indianapolis is a small part of INDOT’s $850 million investment in its 770 maintenance and modernization plans throughout Indiana in this year alone.
According to In.Gov, over the next five years, INDOT will invest nearly $3.2 billion in bridge and pavement maintenance. INDOT says that its bridge preservation will improve the safety of motorists by extending the lifespan of bridges and pavement.
