According to the Chicago Tribue, starting on the very first day of 2015, the toll rate for commercial tractor trailers will increase by 40% on the Illinois Tollway.
The increase comes as part of a $12 billion dollar renovation to widen the tollway.
The 40% price hike is only the beginning however. Over the next two years, there will be two more 10% increases for commercial trucks.
According to executive director Kristi Lafleru, these renovations “”will ensure that our roads will safely accommodate more trucks while relieving congestion, potentially saving the trucking industry millions of dollars in lost time and fuel.”
The Tollway also expects to hit an all-time high in revenue in 2015.
Commercial trucks currently make up roughly 11% of the total vehicles that pass through the tollway on a daily basis, but account for more than 60% of the revenue.
