A trucking advocacy group has announced a planned protest called “Day Without A Trucker,” in order to bring attention to the safety issues plaguing the trucking industry and to call for legislation for a national firearm carry permit for interstate truck drivers.

The event, created by a group called ‘Trucker Lives Matter’ is scheduled for September 5th, 2017 in Washington D.C. According to a press release, the group has called for interstate truck drivers to “take the day off and drive to Washington, D.C. to publicize the need to be able to carry firearms nationwide to protect themselves while living and working on the road.”

The event will also include a memorial procession honoring interstate transportation professionals who have been slain on the road.

‘Trucker Lives Matter’ was founded by Small Business in Transportation Coalition (SBTC) president James Lamb. Lamb says the murder of truck driver Michael Boeglin, who was killed and burned in his truck in Detroit in June of 2014, sparked the beginnings of the TLM movement.

The press release says that, so far, nearly 700 truck drivers have indicated that they will likely attend the rally in Washington D.C. in September.

“We would encourage residents of Washington, D.C. to consider taking public rail transportation to get to work on Sept. 5th as we do not know how many truckers will respond to the call,” Lamb added.
