A petition that was launched earlier today has started to pick up steam in the trucking community from drivers who are upset at major truck stop chains charging for parking spots.
The signers of the petition are calling for truck stops and travel centers that currently charge a fee for reserved parking to put an immediate end to the practice, which they call an “act of greed.”
The description states that the limited availability of free parking and the rise of reserved (paid) parking will force some drivers to have to decide between eating a hot meal or paying for parking.
The full petition text reads as follows:
Trucking has changed dramatically, in the past 20 years. There are more trucks on the road than ever, and, with more trucks, more availability of parking is required. VIP, or “reserved” parking, creates a huge problem. Many companies do not reimburse drivers for parking fees. At an approximate cost of $15, this is the cost of a good meal, that drivers won’t have, just so they can have a place to park. Regular parking spots are all full, and 20 “reserved” parking spots are available. Drivers have no more drive time available to go elsewhere, and are “forced” to pay the fees for reserved parking. Travel Centers; i.e., truck stops, are places for a driver to get a decent meal, do laundry, get a shower, rest, and get some sleep. The signers of this petition are calling for an immediate “cease and desist” action to be taken by any business that partakes in this act of greed.
Supporters of the petition aired out their grievances in the comments.
The petition on change.org was signed by over 300 drivers less than 12 hours after being posted online. You can view or add your name to the petition here.
