Back in 2014, Georgia State Patrol began enforcing the 269 “Slow Poke Law” which ticketed slow drivers in the left lane of busy Georgia highways.

The law was enacted in order to cut down on accidents stemming from aggressive driving and road rage. Under the law, a driver must move out of the left lane to allow vehicles behind him to pass if they are driving at a faster rate of speed, even if they are speeding.

According to Channel 2 News in Atlanta, Gwinnet and Cobb county officers have written over 300 “slow poke” tickets since 2014.

Troopers say they’ve also let off many drivers with just a warning, as many people are still unaware of the rule. As time goes on, however, the general public should become more aware of the law, freeing up the hammer lane for passing vehicles or paying a fine for clogging up the lane.
