According to CBC News, a fuel tanker collapsed into an ice road in northwest Canada, earlier this week, shortly after the local Dept. of Transportation increased the legal weight limit by 300%
The incident happened near Deline, Northwest Territories, on the afternoon of Saturday, March 5th.
Just three days prior, on March 2nd, the legal weight limit was increased to 40,000 kg (roughly 88,000 pounds) from 10,000 kg (roughly 22,000 pounds).
Gov’t of the Northwest Territories Dept. of Transportation posted this tweet to make the announcement.

Government officials said 11 fuel tankers had safely traveled the route since the weight limit increase on the 2nd.
The driver of the fuel tanker was not injured, but the area has been temporarily closed for travel. Authorities hope to reopen the route for lighter loads once it’s deemed safe.
