According to a new state law, truckers will be required to pay a toll when passing through Rhode Island via Interstate 95. Signed into effect by Governor Gina Raimondo, the “RhodeWorks” bill was established to fund the repair of the state’s neglected roads and bridges. The state of Rhode Island will start charging truckers a $40 toll in 2017 and is expected to bring in $45 million a year in revenue.
When questioned by a reporter from Fox News about the bill’s controversy as it relates to truckers’ opposition, Governor Raimondo responded that “no one benefits more from good roads than truckers…they deserve safe roads that are well-maintained.”
Truckers are understandably outraged at this seemingly anti-trucker law.
Here’s how drivers responded to the news:
Howard Abramson shares his abrasive point of view in his article published in the Providence Journal. This former ATA executive cold-hardheartedly proclaims that Rhode Island should “ignore truckers’ crocodile tears and blustery threats” as he defends the new tolls. His article reasons that truckers are the main source of the money draining road caused damage. Yet his statement fails to factor in the amount of business truckers supply to the state.
This was his message to the state.
Many truckers opposing the bill are speaking out about a state-wide boycott.
Would you take the long route around to avoid this truck only toll as a protest? Would you avoid the state completely?
