A truck driver was killed when his rig overturned and caught fire early Friday morning, while traveling with his two young children.
Police say the driver’s two young sons, ages 5 and 2, were passengers in the truck, which lost control and struck a concrete pillar on the southbound North Freeway, near Beltway 8 in Houston, Texas. It happened around 1:20 a.m.
After overturning, flames quickly engulfed the rig. The driver was ejected from the cab and died at the scene. His 5-year-old son, who was also ejected from the vehicle, told troopers that he helped pull his 2-year-old brother out the burning wreckage.
The 2-year-old suffered serious burns, but is expected to live. He is being treated at Memorial Hermann hospital.
The family was headed to their new home in Galveston. The children’s mother was traveling ahead of the truck in an RV, and did not witness the crash.
The North Freeway’s southbound lanes were closed for several hours due to the crash, but have since reopened.
