Georgia police officers have set up a DUI checkpoint at a weigh station on Interstate 95 in Chatham County.

About 50 officers were present at the weight station located at mile marker 110. They have been examining commercial drivers for signs of impairment as they roll through the scales.

The checkpoint began on Wednesday evening and continued into Thursday.

“We want to save that life. We want to save 20 lives. But if we can save that one life, by getting that one impaired driver, truck driver off the road, then it’s worth it. We hope that there are zero truck drivers that come through here tonight that we have to arrest. They need to move our goods and products on the roadways, we just want them to do that in a safe manner. So we hope we arrest zero,” said Powell Harrelson, of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

As of 5:45 on Thursday morning, officers performed several roadside sobriety tests and arrested three people for impaired driving according to local news station WTOC.com. 35 drivers were also placed out-of-service for driving over their legally allowed driving time.

It’s unclear when the checkpoint will end. Police say the checkpoint will remain active “as long as there are trucks to check.”
