A motorist survived a frightening crash with a flatbed truck that sent metal pipes crashing through his windshield.

The accident happened on southbound Interstate 17 in Phoenix, Arizona, just before 7:00 a.m, on Thursday.

Police say the SUV driver was distracted and drove into the pipes, which were hanging off the rear of the flatbed truck. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was able to walk out of the vehicle before being transported to a nearby hospital.

Several lanes were closed after the crash, creating miles of traffic backups, however the highway has since reopened. An investigation is underway to determine what caused the SUV driver to drive into the pipes.
