Authorities say the 24-year-old motorist who died in a collision with a FedEx tractor trailer in Oakland, California, may have been racing another car on the highway when the crash occurred.
The collision between the FedEx truck and the Honda Sedan happened on December 22nd, on southbound Interstate 880, however details of the crash were unclear.
The FedEx truck was pulling double trailers and partially overturned in the incident. The Honda also overturned and ended up on its roof, its driver killed in the crash.
Now, several days after the incident, local Fox-2 news has reported that “authorities say there are indications the 24-year-old was racing when the crash happened.”
The motorist who died in the crash, 24-year-old Gonzalo Chavez Jr. of Oakland, was an off-duty UPS driver.
UPS released a statement following Chavez Jr.’s death. “UPS is saddened by the loss of an off-duty employee earlier today. Our thoughts are with our employee’s family and friends. UPS cannot provide any additional information while there is an ongoing investigation,” the statement read.
Although there are indications that the motorist was racing, police aren’t certain if it was the reason for the collision. An investigation into the cause of the crash remains underway.
The FedEx truck driver was not injured and stopped at the scene. He is cooperating with the investigation.
