A semi truck hauling an empty trailer was selected for a random inspection at the Santa Teresa port in New Mexico on Wednesday, which led to a record breaking drug bust.
The truck, driven by 44-year-old Lazaro Alfredo Marquez Cano of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, was required to pass through a secondary x-ray inspection after an initial inspection at the port. That’s when agents noticed something unusual under the bed of the trailer according to KOAT 7 in Albuquerque.
Officers drilled through the bed of the trailer to uncover 3,850 pounds of marijuana, with a street value of over $3,000,000 dollars. It was the largest drug bust at the port in over a decade.
The driver was arrested and faces drug smuggling charges.
