A woman was killed on Sunday morning after trying to pass a semi truck at a high rate of speed on a California highway.

The incident happened on Interstate 8 in Alpine, California, around 11 a.m.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 20-year-old driver in a black BMW was traveling between 90-100 mph, when she attempted to make a high-speed pass between two tractor trailers.

As she tried to squeeze in between both trucks, the BMW struck the right side of one of the rigs.

The impact was so strong that it ripped off parts of the car, leaving pieces of the car’s roof and door on the roadway and sending the BMW into a ditch.

Police say the driver of the BMW died instantly.

A witnesses stopped and attempted to help the BMW driver, but said “there was nothing” they could do “after seeing what the body looked like.”

The name of the BMW driver has not been released. The truck driver waited at the scene for police to arrive and cooperated with their investigation.
