
A historic Iowa bridge collapsed after a semi truck driver attempted to drive over it on Friday morning.
The Gilliece bridge in Winneshiek County , Iowa, was built in 1874 and marked with a 3-ton weight limit sign. Despite the warning, the truck attempted to cross the historic bridge, causing it to collapse into the Upper Iowa River below.
The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office posted the following on Facebook.
On Friday, May 5, 2017, the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office received a report from the county engineer’s office of a bridge collapse across the Upper Iowa River on Cattle Creek Road. Until the engineer’s office is able to clear bridge debris from the river, canoes will be unable to navigate through the Upper Iowa River at this location. This bridge is located between Coldwater Creek and Chimney Rock.”
The identity and condition of the driver, or any potential charges, have not been released.
