When a pilot car guiding an oversize load lost control, an accident turned fatal.
The incident occurred at around 2:15 p.m. on Friday on SR-6 near mile marker 220 in Carbon County, Utah.
An eastbound truck carrying an oversize load was escorted by two pilot vehicles. The rear pilot vehicle, a Dodge Dakota, was driven by 46-year-old Danyel Walton of West Valley City.
For unknown reasons, Walton lost control of her car, veered over the center line and sideswiped a westbound Dodge Caliber.
She then rammed into a commercial water tanker head-on.
The Salt Lake Tribune reported that Walton suffered serious injuries then died as a result. Two people from the Dodge Caliber suffered minor injuries. The driver of the water tanker was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
The driver hauling the oversize load was not reported injured. A Ford Focus driving behind the Dodge Caliber was damaged while its driver evaded a crash. That driver sustained no injuries.
The damage from the collisions was extensive.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation. The Utah Highway Patrol does not believe impairment, speed or distracted driving were factors.
