On May 23rd, in El Paso, Texas, a multi-vehicle crash left two people dead and hospitalized six. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on I-10 East near Sunland Park.

According to El Paso Times, police have not yet released extensive details about the accident which was still under investigation late Monday night.

A look at the scene reveals a gray vehicle which rolled and wound up on its roof in the westbound lanes. Another vehicle was found on its roof in the eastbound lanes.

Crews assessed the damage.

Police say additional vehicles were also involved.

Black smoke clouded the sky and could be seen miles away.

The El Paso Fire Department reported that crews arrived around 6:15 p.m.

At the scene, officials found a semi engulfed in flames.

El Paso Fire Department spokesman Carlos Briano said that 36 firefighters responded to the scene to both extinguish flames and save lives of victims.

Briano stated:

“They (firefighters) saw an 18-wheeler engulfed with another vehicle underneath it.”

It took firefighters about an hour to get the fire under control.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released.

The crash shut down I-10 in both directions. TxDOT detoured eastbound traffic off the freeway at the Mesa Street exit, while westbound traffic was detoured at the Sunland Park Drive exit.

The freeway was closed for over four hours after the incident.
