An auto mechanic from Pittsfield, Massachusetts caused serious injury after driving drunk and crashing into a semi at dangerous speeds.

The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday in the northbound lane of I-91 near Exit 3 in Springfield, Massachusetts.

According to investigators, it happened while 23-year-old Adam Hugabone was clearly intoxicated and driving a 2003 Audi A4.

Hugabone rear-ended a semi truck and became wedged underneath.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the man covered in blood from injuries to his face. When asked if he was alone in the car, he responded, “No, (she’s) in there, but she’s awake, right?”

That’s when police found the 28-year–old woman unconscious and bleeding from injuries. She was rescued with the jaws of life. She is still in critical condition. The 58-year-old truck driver from Tripoli, Pennsylvania was taken to a hospital to treat injuries from the crash.

When questioned, Hugabone stated that he was trying to pass the semi truck when the truck driver changed lanes, causing the rear-end collision.

Police said that Hugabone “reeked of alcohol” and his speech was “thick tongued and slurred.” When asked if he had been drinking, Hugabone admitted that he had been drinking all day and night.

According to MassLive, Hugabond refused to take a breathalyzer test and his license was automatically suspended.

Hugabone entered a not guilty plea to charges of DUI, speeding, causing serious bodily injury and negligent driving. Judge William Boyle stated that since he turned 18, Hugabone accumulated 25 convictions. His bail was set at $50,000.
