Sheriff Says Fake Highway Trooper Is Conducting Illegal Traffic Stops In North Carolina

A man in Onslow County, North Carolina, has been impersonating a highway trooper and pulling over motorists for illegal traffic stops.

According to WECT-6, the local sheriff’s office has received multiple reports of the police impostor since Monday, all describing the same man.

The suspect is described as a tall white male in his early 30s, wearing a baseball cap with a North Carolina Highway Patrol patch and a black jack. He was reported to be driving a black Dodge Charger with a large antenna.

Sergeant David Oglesby of N.C. State Highway Patrol warned drivers to be cautious and says the impostor may pose a threat to unsuspecting motorists.

The NHCP shared the following tips for dealing with the situation:

-In the event you are stopped by an unmarked car and it appears suspicious, you should call 911.

-If someone tries to stop you, continue driving until you are in a well-lit area such as a gas station or an open business.

-A true law-enforcement officer will not have a problem with someone calling 911 to confirm that they are legitimate.

Anyone with information is being asked to call the Onslow County Sheriff’s office at 910-455-3113. There is a $2,500 reward for information that leads to his arrest.
