An investigation is underway after 67 guns were stolen from a tractor trailer while its driver was asleep in the rig.

It happened in Olive Branch, Mississipi, on Sunday night, around 10 p.m.

According to the Clarion-Ledger, the trucker was scheduled to deliver the load of firearms and ammunition at the  Academy Sports in Olive Branch early Monday morning.   He arrived to the store on Sunday evening, and slept in his truck overnight.

When the truck was being unloaded, around 6 a.m. on Monday, workers noticed that the seal on the trailer had been broken.

That’s when they realized that 67 firearms and an undisclosed amount of ammunition were missing from the trailer.

According to reports, the stolen load included 61 handguns and 6 rifles.

“In general it’s always a concern when any number of firearms are taken from legal commerce and diverted to criminal activity, but even one gun is one too many,” said ATF Spokesman Special Agent Kevin Moran.

“Of course, this is a priority for the ATF to be involved in, and we hope to recover every firearm and the information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those involved. It’s a huge priority,” he added.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call  DeSoto County Crime Stoppers at (662) 429-TIPS.
