A section of Interstate 24 in Tennessee will be shut down on Sunday, September 27th in order for a 250-ton transformer to be transported.
The 500,000 pound TVA transformer is being moved to the Raccoon Mountain Pumped Storage Facility off Hwy 41 in Chattanooga.
The load is so large that workers will have to shut down both directions of Interstate 24 around mile marker 174, and remove the cable guardrails in order to slowly maneuver the load from the eastbound lanes to the westbound lanes.
According to the Times Free Press, the closure will begin at 7 a.m. and last until noon.
The load will exit I-24 from the Westbound lanes, and head onto U.S. 41, before making its way to the storage facility.
In addition to the closure off I-24, the Tennessee Dept. of Transportation also expects heavy delays on U.S. 41.
The transformer is being hauled by Edwards Moving & Rigging, a Kentucky carrier that specializes in moving oversize loads.
