Homeland security has opened a human-smuggling investigation after agents discovered 37 illegal immigrants locked inside a semi truck near San Antonio, Texas, on Friday.
According to an official statement, border patrol agents were tipped off of the suspicious truck by someone who heard voices coming from inside the trailer at a gas station.
“Cotulla Border Patrol Station received a call for assistance from Frio County Sheriffs Office regarding a concerned citizen call they received of several people locked inside a tractor trailer near a gas station on HWY 57 and 35,” the statement read.
Officers were able to catch up with the truck and discovered 37 undocumented aliens crammed into the back of the trailer. They were taken to nearby hospitals to get checked out.
A human smuggling investigation is now being led by homeland security.
Officials have not released what country the immigrants were from, and did not specify if the driver was arrested.
