A semi truck hauling livestock overturned, spilling pigs on Interstate 15 on Tuesday afternoon.
It happened around 3 p.m. on southbound I-15 in Mohave County, Arizona.
According to St. George News, a leaf spring fractured near the front of the truck as it made a sharp right turn. The driver told responders that he felt the front of the truck “lift into the air” before it overturned onto a concrete barrier.
The trailer, loaded with 162 pigs, ripped open after smashing into the barrier. Several pigs were killed in the crash. Many others escaped and wandered on the roadway.
The truck driver’s only injury was a sore leg. He refused medical treatment.
Local ranchers were called to the scene to herd the surviving pigs. In total, more than 30 pigs made it onto the road.
One witness said she “saw the truck tip over and the trailer hit the median, and it opened up like a can of beans and pigs were just falling out and hitting the ground.”
The southbound lanes were closed for several hours in order for cleanup crews to clear the scene. It has since reopened.
