The Iowa Department of Transportation was forced to clear off the Savanna/Sabula bridge after it was swarmed with a thick layer of mayfies earlier this week.
This video, which was posted on July 22nd, shows a DOT officer getting out of his vehicle on the bug infested bridge.
Authorities say that an ankle deep layer of mayflies “covered the bridge, making it very slick.” Several vehicles have slipped on the bridge in the last few days.
In order to prevent future accidents, DOT officers plowed the bugs off the bridge with a snowplow, then poured salt on top of the bridge.
The Mayfly hatching season is expected to last another week. Until then, the lights on the bridge will remain off, as it attracts a large amount of the bugs.
