The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Highway Patrol says that a recent commercial truck crash near Maricopa was caused by a truck driver reaching for his sun visor.
The crash occurred just after on December 17, 2025, on I-8 just outside of Maricopa, Arizona.
From AZDPS:
“The semi-truck driver stated he was blinded by the sun glare, reached up to grab the sun visor, and veered off to the left into the dirt median. His truck then continued through the dirt median, and into eastbound traffic where the truck finally jack-knifed and came to rest blocking all eastbound traffic.“
The truck driver was cited for speed not reasonable and prudent, Arizona police said.
AZDPS offered the following driving tips after the crash:
- Keep both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road at all times.
- If something needs attention while driving, pull over to a safe location first. Adjust sun visors, mirrors, and other controls before driving or when safely stopped.
- Distraction is dangerous—it only takes a second for a situation to change.
