Last year on primary election day, a chain-reaction accident caused a semi truck to slam into the back of a car, sending it off of the Combs-Hehl Bridge and into the Ohio river outside of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Now, the family of the car driver who died in the accident is suing the truck driver, even though a police investigation determined that the trucker was not at fault.
According to Cincinnati.com, the incident started when a car lost control and slid across three lanes of traffic and struck another car. That accident forced a third car, driven by David Bouma, to slam on its brakes. The semi behind the Bouma’s car did not have sufficient time to stop, and hit it, sending it over the bridge into the Ohio river.
Officials say that Thomas Harmon, the driver of the tractor trailer, was not at fault, and that the accident was a result of the chain of events created by each vehicle.
Authorities conducted a 3 month investigation and found no evidence of distracted driving, alcohol, or drugs.
Still, the victim’s family is suing Thomas Harmon, and has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against him for the death of Bouma, local Fox-19 reported.
Bouma’s vehicle was underwater for two weeks before crews recovered it from the Ohio River and confirmed Bouma’s identity.
