A fugitive who took police on an 80-mph chase through downtown Cheyenne, Wyoming, is behind bars today thanks to a truck driver’s quick decision.
The incident took took place in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on Friday afternoon, when police showed up at a house to arrest fugitive Daniel Gutierrez.
“Daniel was believed to be at 612 E. 2nd Street,” said Cheyenne Police spokesperson Kevin Malatesta. “This is the same residence that we were trying to contact him at last year in October when we had to shoot the dog that was released upon officers.”
When police showed up to the residence to make the arrest, Gutierrez fled in a white Nissan Armada, successfully evading police for nearly 25-minutes with a high speed chase through the city.
“It winded around downtown and the south side of Cheyenne,” said Malatesta. “Speeds reached up to 80 mph and during that time Gutierrez drove into the oncoming lane of traffic several times as well as made multiple other traffic violations.”
The chase finally came to an end when a semi truck driver realized what was going on and pulled his rig across the roadway, blocking Gutierrez’s path. Officers were able to arrest Gutierriez thanks to the trucker’s move.
In addition to the the original arrest warrant, Gutierrez was also charged with possession of methamphetamine, reckless driving, fleeing/eluding police, and multiple traffic offenses.
Police say as Gutierrez was being arrested he told them “that he would have been shooting at officers if he had been armed.”
