Brian was a truck driver working in Houston until he broke his hand in an accident.

His company was able to send him back home, in Illinois, via Greyhound since he was unable to drive, but the problem was he had to leave his pit bull, Schmitty, behind.

He was worried about his dog so he called the Houston Humane Society just to make sure his dog survives.

“All he said was please don’t allow your city to kill my dog,” said the Houston Humane Society pit bull contact, Amanda Vysocky.

“You know it was so touching and he was desperate. And he didn’t ask for his dog back. He just wanted him alive. And as we were explaining this, I was like, well do you genuinely want your dog? And he said more than anything in the world. He’s my son. Well I said let me go get your dog.”

After that phone call, plans to bring Schmitty home immediately went in planning. Vysocky made calls and spread the word on Facebook. Eventually, arrangements to send the pit bull home were made with no extra charge.

Brian got his dog, Schmitty, in honor of his son who passed away. When he had to go home and couldn’t bring his dog, he felt like he was going to lose another son. His daughter is currently away in the military and his wife has recently started cancer treatment.

The family has seen more than their share of problems so getting back one of their family members is a good step in a brighter direction.

Volunteers will drive Schmitty to their home while others volunteered to foster him through the journey. It’ll take a few stops but Schmitty should be safe and back with Brian by Thursday.
