A truck driver escaped a serious wreck without injury on Wednesday after police say she crashed her truck while reaching for her dog.
The accident happened on May 30th at around 11:12 p.m. in South Brunswick, New Jersey.
According to My Central Jersey News, 65-year-old Delores Leger was traveling northbound on Route 1 near the intersection of Ridge Road when she says she took her eyes off the road to reach for one of her dogs that had jumped off the seat and onto the floorboards as she drove.
When Leger took her eyes off the roadway she veered to the left, cutting through a construction zone where she struck down several road closure signs and barricades before driving off the road, striking a utility pole and a tree before reentering the roadway, overturning, and landing passenger side down, rupturing the fuel tank.
Leger sustained only minor injuries in the wreck and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The two dogs were not injured in the wreck and were returned to Leger after her hospital visit.
The crash forced the closure of Route 1 until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday morning as crews worked to fix power outages to nearby traffic lights, as well as clear the debris, spilled fuel, and wrecked tractor trailer from the roadway.
Ledger was issued a summons for careless driving and unsafe lane change.
