Bronx, NY (6/6/2014) — A 35 year old truck driver was killed in New York on Wednesday morning after a manhole cover exploded and flew straight through his windshield.
The incident occured on the westbound Cross Bronx expressway at 5:30 AM. The flying manhole cover shattered his windshield, hitting driver José Duran in the head. He then collided with another semi truck.
The driver of the truck he crashed into was unharmed.
Duran suffered head trauma after being struck by the manhole cover, and died at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx. It’s currently unclear as to why the manhole cover was dislodged and launched into the air.
Robert Sinclair, a spokesman for AAA, said that he’s never head of such an incident happening before.
