A semi truck crashed through a church in Delaware County, Indiana, on Friday afternoon when the driver reportedly lost control while choking on a cough drop.
An Indiana State Police trooper traveling on Interstate 69 saw the aftermath of the crash, which happened 50 feet off the highway at mile marker 248. He rushed to the scene and discovered the driver lying on the ground outside his damaged truck.
Witnesses say the truck traveled off the highway, through a fence, and crashed through the Living Hope Church, located at 14300 County Road 900 West.
The truck driver, 44-year-old Daniel Castel of Roseville, Michigan, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He told police that that last thing remembers was “choking on a cough drop” as he drove northbound on I-69.
No one was in the church at the time of the crash.
A four-car crash took place on the northbound lanes of highway after the incident due to people slowing down to look at the scene, police said.
The investigation is still underway.
