A truck driver is okay after striking a tire left in the roadway, causing his rig to overturn and catch fire.

The incident happened on Wednesday, March 21st at approximately 12:41 p.m. in Hammond, Indiana.

Indiana State Police say that 56-year-old Amrik Bal was driving a 2014 Volvo semi truck west on the Borman Expressway when he struck a tire sitting in the roadway, forcing the truck into a concrete barrier before it overturned across several lanes of traffic. The force of the crash then ruptured the diesel fuel tank, sparking a fire that soon destroyed the tractor.

Luckily, Bal was able to escape the wrecked rig on his own and was transported to a nearby hospital with only minor injuries, reported the NWI Times.

Police say that the tire that caused the crash, along with a second tire, had fallen off a tow truck driven by 40-year-old Dwayne A. Harris traveling eastbound just prior to the accident, and that the tire responsible for the wreck had bounced over the concrete median and into the westbound lanes just before Bal collided with it. It is not known if Harris has been issued any citations for the incident.

Motorists were urged to find alternate routes as fire crews battled the flaming semi truck for several hours, but the fire has since been extinguished and the accident, cleared.
