Officers from the Marietta Police Department in Georgia have been going undercover in order to catch drivers that are texting behind the wheel.

Officers disguised as construction workers monitored a busy intersection in Cobb County this week, and radioed uniformed officers when they spotted a distracted driver. They say the strategy was very effective, as most drivers paid very little attention to their crew.

Officer Nick Serkedakis told WSBTV, “What we’ve done here is we’re able to put officers in the roads so we’re able to get close enough almost inside their cars so we can look down and see exactly what they’re doing on their phones”

Serkedakis noted that many drivers were caught on their phones while waiting at red lights. In many cases, officers has to explain the law to skeptical drivers, “It doesn’t matter if you’re stopped at a light, if you’re on a public thoroughfare and facing the phone we’re going to have a conversation with you,” he said.

Drivers who were busted for distracted driving, received a $150 dollar ticket and points on their license.
