A motorist claims his Tesla Model S was on autopilot when it crashed into the back of a parked fire truck in California on Monday.

The accident happened on January 22nd at approximately 8:30 a.m. in Culver City, California.

According to Mercury News, the motorist was traveling along Interstate 405 when he crashed into the back of a Culver City Fire Department truck that was parked at the scene of a previous accident. The force of the impact crushed the front of the Tesla and damaged the rear of the fire truck, but no one was hurt in the incident.

Firefighters say that the vehicle was travelling at around 65 mph when it struck the fire truck, but it is not clear whether the car was in the process of slowing when it hit.

The unidentified motorist claims that the car was functioning on autopilot at the time of the crash, but officials are still unable to confirm this.

“It was a pretty big hit,” said Culver City Fire Department battalion chief Ken Powell.

Tesla has since made a statement advising that autopilot is “intended for use only with a fully attentive driver.”
