A fiery crash shut down a portion of the 405 Freeway on Monday after a motorist cut in front of a semi truck, causing a crash that left at least one in critical condition.

The accident happened on April 30th at approximately 3:00 p.m. in Los Angeles, California.

According to ABC 7, a semi truck hauling chunks of concrete and dirt was traveling on the northbound 405 near the Sepulveda Pass when it was cut off by another motorist, forcing the truck driver to change lanes and collide with another vehicle. The tractor trailer then overturned, landing on top of the sedan and spilling its load of concrete and dirt across the 405 southbound. The truck then erupted into flames.

Luckily, the truck driver was able to escape his wrecked rig on his own and suffered only minor back and neck injuries. The driver of the sedan was pulled from the crushed car by some passing members of the UCLA ROTC and is currently listed in critical condition after suffering severe burns covering 80% of his body.

“I truly believe they saved his life…To them, we say thank you very much,” CHP Sgt. Jose Ahumada told KTLA.

Another motorist following behind the crash struck some rocks spilled in the wreck, causing her to crash. She sustained a broken arm but is expected to make a full recovery along with the unnamed truck driver. It is not yet clear if the motorist who cut off the semi truck will be issued a citation.

Fire fighters were able to extinguish the fire at around 3:20 p.m., but several north and southbound lanes of the 405 Freeway were shut down until after midnight as crews worked to clear the debris and clean up the oil spilled in the accident.
