A portion of Interstate 96 in Michigan was shut down Friday morning after a semi truck hauling asphalt overturned, spilling it across the eastbound lanes.
The accident happened on May 25th at around 7:15 a.m. outside of Detroit, Michigan.
According to Click on Detroit News, the semi truck hauling double trailers of asphalt was traveling in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 96 near Kensington Lake Road when, for reasons that are not yet known, it overturned, spilling its load of asphalt and blocking the eastbound lanes.
“A semi hauling hot asphalt overturned and has covered the freeway with the asphalt,” wrote the Michigan Police Department in a statement.
“There is hot asphalt in all lanes,” they continued.
No injuries have been reported, but the eastbound lanes of I-96 were shut down at Kensington Lake Road, forcing traffic to exit at Kensington Lake Road before getting back on the interstate at Kent Lake Road.
I-96 was then shut down at US Highway 23 as crews worked on an “extensive” cleanup.
Although Detroit News reports that I-96 was reopened at approximately 9:40 a.m. on Friday morning, officials still advise that drivers “seek an alternate route.”
