The Federal Highway Administration plans to meet with New York Department of Transportation officials to discuss the removal of 500 “I Love NY” signs that have been erected on the state’s highways.
The state says the signs help promote tourism and display information about local attractions, but the feds argue otherwise. The FHA believes that the signs display unnecessary information which can lead to distracted driving and increase the risk of crashes.
They FHA also said the signs “don’t conform to federal standards.”
According to ABC-7 in New York, the FHA has threatened to cut $1 billion in federal highway funding to the state if they don’t remove the signs.
The FHA and NY DOT are slated to meet in January to resolve the matter.
