An elderly couple was seriously injured after losing control of their vehicle due to a blown tire and ending up underneath a tanker truck on Sunday afternoon.

It happened on October 15th at approximately 4 p.m. in Goshen, New York.

According to Record Online, 69-year-old Alejandro Rivera was driving his 1999 Subaru SUV in the right lane of westbound Route 17 when his vehicle began to shake.

A tanker truck traveling behind the SUV noticed the car’s strange movements and moved into the left lane to give the car space.

That’s when a tire on Rivera’s car blew, sending the car spinning across the highway. The car then spun in front of the semi truck and ended up pinned beneath the big rig, setting the rig on fire.

The driver of the tanker truck was not injured in the accident.

Alejandro Rivera sustained a broken back, broken ribs, and a broken ankle. His wife, 82-year-old Carmen Rivera, was a passenger in the car at the time of the accident. She is currently in intensive care at a nearby hospital. The details of her injuries have not been made clear.

The tanker truck was carrying liquid sugar and Route 17 was closed for several hours as crews cleaned up the mess.

The highway has since been reopened.
